Roma Jiu Jitsu Academy opened in downtown Hilo in April 2016 and is owned by Kawika Yoneda and his wife Jamie. Yoneda trained at Art of Jiu Jitsu in California under Rafael and Guilherme Mendes, received his black belt from Rafael Mendes in 2017, and brought the Atos affiliation to Hawaii Island, with the academy operating as Roma Jiu Jitsu Academy / Atos Hilo.
The academy is family-oriented and teaches jiu-jitsu for fitness, competition and self-defense. Programs run from keiki classes starting at age 3 through adult gi and no-gi, with an emphasis on competition preparation; a 2019 article reported more than 100 kids and teen students, and Roma athletes have competed at the IBJJF Pan Kids Championship. The academy also has an affiliate, Kolosa Jiu Jitsu Academy in Honoka'a.
