Junior Fernandes was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro and began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a teenager, encouraged by his brother-in-law Wallid Ismail. He trained under Ricardo Cavalcanti before joining Carlson Gracie's academy, where he met Master Ricardo Liborio, who awarded him every belt from blue through black (2004). He moved to Fort Lauderdale in 2007 at Liborio's invitation to teach and now owns and operates Athlas Training Team with his wife Ana; he was promoted to 4th degree in 2018 and has since been promoted to 5th degree.
