There’s a myth that progress comes from grinding yourself into the ground. It doesn’t. Adaptation happens while you rest, not while you train. On a retreat, where you train far more than usual, getting recovery right is the difference between thriving all week and falling apart by day four.

1. Sleep comes first

Nothing else makes up for missing it. Aim for eight to nine hours in a cool, dark room, and build the evening around winding down instead of scrolling. A short nap during the hottest part of the day is one of the best recovery tools you have.

2. Eat real meals, and enough of them

Two sessions a day burn a lot of energy. Build every meal around protein, colorful vegetables and enough carbohydrate to fuel the next session. This is where an all-inclusive package quietly does a lot of work: fresh, locally sourced meals are ready when you are, so you eat well without thinking about it.

3. Hydrate for the heat

In a tropical climate you sweat more than you realize. Sip water all day and add electrolytes after hard sessions. If you’re also surfing, drink even more.

4. Use the tools on site

  • Cold plunge: a few minutes after training helps many athletes feel fresher for the next session.
  • Yoga and mobility: a mobility class in the yoga shala loosens hips, shoulders and backs that grappling and striking tighten up.
  • Massage: add a massage to your trip for the middle of the week, when soreness usually peaks.
  • The pool and the ocean: easy swimming or a slow walk on the beach is active recovery that doesn’t feel like work.

5. Take a lighter day

Plan at least one easier day mid-week. Drill instead of rolling, skip a session for a surf lesson, or explore Nosara. You’ll come back to the mats sharper.

Train hard, recover harder, and the week takes care of itself.

Jungle’s Edge was built around this balance, with open-air mats, a cold plunge, a yoga shala and an infinity-edge pool on one property. Explore the resort or build your Train-cation with massage and recovery add-ons.
