Ask a room full of jiu-jitsu players what they do on their days off and a surprising number will say surf. The two share more than a beach-town lifestyle. Both reward staying calm under pressure, reading momentum instead of fighting it, and showing up again after the ocean (or your training partner) humbles you. Nosara, home to Playa Guiones, is one of the best places in the world to do both in the same day.
Why Playa Guiones works for every level
Playa Guiones is a long sandy beach break, which means waves break over sand rather than reef. That makes it forgiving for beginners and consistent enough to keep experienced surfers happy, with peaks spread along its length, so there’s room to find your own wave. Warm water means most people surf in board shorts or a rash guard.

Timing your sessions
Surf conditions change with tide and wind, and many surfers head out early before the afternoon wind picks up. The dry season (December to April) brings sunny, glassy mornings; the green season (May to November) tends to bring bigger swells and fewer people. A local surf instructor or school can point you to the best window each day.
Fitting surf around training
Surfing is a serious workout on its own: paddling hammers the shoulders and back, and popping up hundreds of times adds up. A few tips for pairing it with mat time:
- Alternate intensity. Hard morning roll, easy afternoon surf, or the reverse. Avoid stacking two maximum sessions every day.
- Protect your shoulders. Build in mobility work, and use the yoga shala and cold plunge between sessions.
- Hydrate and eat. Sun, saltwater and training burn through energy fast. All-inclusive meals remove the guesswork.
- Take a lesson. Even strong athletes progress much faster with an instructor reading the waves for them.
Getting to the beach from Jungle’s Edge
From Jungle’s Edge it’s about three minutes by car, eight minutes by bike or a twenty-minute walk to Playa Guiones. Surf lessons can be added to your trip when you build your Train-cation, and ATV rentals make it easy to explore the other beaches around Nosara.
Train in the jungle. Surf the Pacific. Repeat.
