Pack lighter than you think. A training week in Costa Rica needs less than most people bring, but a few items make a big difference. Here’s what to put in your bag.

Training gear

  • Gis or No-Gi kit: enough for one set per session, or plan on laundry. Two gis is a good minimum for a Gi-heavy week.
  • Rash guards and shorts: quick-drying fabrics are your friend in the humidity.
  • Mouthguard: essential for striking and sparring.
  • Hand wraps and gloves for Muay Thai or boxing, plus shin guards if you have them.
  • Finger and toe tape, and a small first-aid kit for mat burn and blisters.
  • Sandals for walking to and from the mats.

Beach and jungle essentials

  • Reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Insect repellent for evenings in the jungle
  • Swimsuits and a quick-dry towel
  • A light rain jacket if you’re traveling in the green season (May to November)
  • A reusable water bottle and electrolyte packets

Travel documents and money

  • Your passport, with plenty of validity left. Check Costa Rica’s current entry requirements before you fly.
  • A credit card, plus some cash. U.S. dollars are widely accepted in Nosara alongside Costa Rican colones.
  • Travel insurance details, including coverage for sports injuries.

Good news on electronics

Costa Rica uses the same plug types and voltage as the United States, so American travelers usually don’t need an adapter. Bring your chargers and a small power bank for beach days.

Training gear, sunscreen, a good attitude. Everything else is optional.

What you can leave at home

You don’t need your own mats, heavy bags or a closet of outfits. Resorts provide the training space, and most guests live in shorts and sandals all week. Laundry service means you can re-wear your favorite gear.
